About This City

Bangkok carries the country's MICE traffic by sheer weight of infrastructure. QSNCC's rebuilt 2022 complex and BITEC's halls in Bang Na between them cover most of what a large exhibition or plenary conference needs, and IMPACT — technically over the provincial line in Nonthaburi, but never sold as anything but a Bangkok venue — adds the country's largest single column-free floor on top. All three publish seat-count fact sheets rather than the vaguer "up to X people" a hotel often settles for, which is unusual outside the biggest hub cities in the region.

The city's hotel ballrooms are a second, separate ecosystem. Centara Grand's 22nd-floor convention wing at CentralWorld seats 5,000 theatre-style on its own; Shangri-La and the Athenee run river-view and city-centre ballrooms at the 1,000-1,600 seat mark. For a programme under about 1,500 delegates, a hotel ballroom is usually the simpler booking — one contract, one kitchen, no separate negotiation with a convention centre's own AV and catering monopolies.

What none of this solves is traffic. A hall that is 25 minutes from the airport on paper can be 90 minutes at the wrong time of day, and a delegate list arriving off six different flights on a Friday afternoon will meet six different versions of that same road.

Getting There

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are Bangkok's own airports, so there is no domestic leg to plan around — international delegates land directly into the city. Most venues on this list are 25 minutes to an hour from one of the two by road, with the caveat that Bangkok traffic can double that at the wrong time of day. QSNCC and BITEC both have direct MRT or BTS access, which nothing outside the capital offers.

Best For

Bangkok is the only realistic choice for anything over about 3,000 delegates, for an exhibition that needs booth space rather than seats, or for a group flying in from outside Thailand where a direct international arrival matters more than the destination's scenery. It is a poor choice for a programme that is really an incentive trip or a reward experience — the convention centres and hotel ballrooms here are built for business, not for the beach afternoon or hill-country quiet that Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai each do better.

Reopened in 2022 after a top-to-bottom rebuild, QSNCC now runs to eight exhibition halls across two basement levels, four plenary halls and four ballrooms upstairs, and fifty meeting rooms, all connected by escalator and skybridge to the MRT — a delegate can arrive by train and never see a car park. The eight exhibition halls, each around 5,300-5,900 sqm, can run alone or combine into one very large floor; the plenary halls and ballrooms upstairs are the more usual booking for a conference or gala, each roughly 1,000-1,300 sqm and combinable in twos and fours.

IMPACT is a small city of its own: three column-free Challenger halls at roughly 20,000 sqm apiece (60,000 sqm combined), a separate Exhibition Center with eight more halls at 47,000 sqm, IMPACT Forum, an arena, and — the room a corporate planner most often actually books — the Royal Jubilee Ballroom, a 3,500 sqm space with a 20-metre ceiling and no columns. IMPACT publishes floor areas for its big exhibition halls readily; it does not publish seat counts for them the way it does for its ballrooms, so a proposal for space inside Challenger or the Exhibition Center should have its layout confirmed in writing rather than assumed from the square metreage.

BITEC (Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre)

BITEC's seven event halls step down from Hall 98 (8,600 sqm, seating 9,000 theatre-style) through Halls 99, 100 and the four interlocking Halls 101-104, all reachable by a covered skywalk from Bang Na BTS station — genuinely useful for a show where visitors arrive by train rather than coach. Hall 100 has the tallest ceiling in the complex at 25 metres and gets first call for anything with a stage or a truss rig; the rest sit at 15 metres. Upstairs, the Grand Hall (1,720 sqm, divisible into three) and sixteen further meeting rooms handle the conference-and-breakout side of an event, though they are smaller and plainer than the exhibition floor below.

The Convention Centre occupies the whole 22nd floor of the hotel tower — one pillarless 5,250 sqm room seating 5,000 theatre-style or taking 7,000 for a standing reception, with the option to split into smaller combinations for two events running at once. A floor up, the smaller World Ballroom (960 sqm, 1,000 theatre-style) handles the gala-dinner end of a programme. Sitting inside one of Bangkok's largest shopping malls is a genuine convenience for delegate downtime and a genuine complication for load-in — service access runs through the same back-of-house as a 500-shop retail complex, so get-in timings need confirming well ahead.

The Grand Ballroom on the lobby level is the largest hotel function room on the river — 1,360 sqm, no columns, seating 1,600 theatre-style or 1,000 for a banquet — and opens onto its own riverside garden for a reception before or after. Twenty-six further function rooms across the Krungthep, Chao Phya and Shangri-La wings cover everything down to a small boardroom, all serviced from a hotel that still runs its own river pier, so a delegate transfer can arrive by boat rather than through Bangkok traffic.
