CMECC gives Chiang Mai something Phuket doesn't have and Pattaya only half has: a purpose-built exhibition and convention centre, its three halls combining into 7,938 sqm of column-free space seating close to 8,000 theatre-style, with two further convention halls and 29 meeting rooms on top. It sits about 15 minutes from the airport but outside the old city with no transit link, so a show expecting downtown hotel guests needs to plan shuttle buses rather than assume a short taxi ride.

The hotel ballroom tier is smaller than Bangkok's but more capable than Phuket's — Shangri-La's Grand Lanna Ballroom, the Chiang Mai Marriott's Suthep Hall and Centara Riverside's Grand Nanta Ballroom between them cover everything from a mid-size national conference down to a smaller breakout-heavy agenda, without needing CMECC's exhibition-hall scale. Meliá Chiang Mai covers the smaller end still, better suited to a compact day than a plenary conference.

/corporate already sells Chiang Mai for the leadership offsite — cooler air, genuine quiet, the northern hills as a backdrop — and the MICE venues here extend that rather than compete with it: even CMECC, at exhibition-hall scale, sits inside a city built around temples and hill country rather than a business district.

Getting There

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes from Bangkok by air, with several flights a day on multiple carriers and a smaller number of direct international routes. The airport sits close to the city — most hotels are 15-20 minutes away — though CMECC, outside the old city, is the one venue on this list that benefits from a scheduled shuttle rather than an assumed short taxi.

Best For

Chiang Mai is a strong choice for a mid-size conference or trade show that doesn't need Bangkok's scale, and for a leadership offsite that wants cooler air and a slower pace over the beach. It's not the right call for anything requiring exhibition-hall scale beyond about 8,000 delegates, or for a group that wants nightlife and beach downtime alongside the meeting — that's Pattaya and Phuket's ground, not Chiang Mai's.

CMECC's three exhibition halls combine into a 7,938 sqm column-free floor seating 7,900 theatre-style, taking 430 standard exhibition booths, or 5,500 for a seated banquet — by a wide margin the largest purpose-built exhibition space north of Bangkok. Two further Ratchaphruek convention halls (1,701 sqm each) and 29 meeting rooms handle the conference side, and there is 7,443 sqm of outdoor space and parking for 3,000 cars, which matters for a trade show expecting a public as well as a trade audience.

Its location in the Night Bazaar district trades convention-centre scale for a walkable evening programme, which suits a smaller conference or incentive group better than a trade show.

The Grand Nanta Ballroom runs to 1,108 sqm, seating 1,000 theatre-style or 600 for a banquet, and divides into four sections for a programme running plenary and breakouts side by side; the smaller Tharathong Ballroom and Lanna Room cover the rest of a multi-track agenda. The river frontage gives a genuine evening option — a riverside reception — that the inland hotels in the old city can't offer.
