Koh Tao is twenty-one square kilometres of granite hill in the western Gulf, and its reputation rests almost entirely on the entry-level end of diving. Thousands of people take their first breath underwater here every year, for reasons that are structural rather than commercial: the bays are shallow and sheltered, there is no meaningful current in most of them, the water sits close to twenty-nine degrees, and you can walk into it off a beach.
That reputation obscures the rest. Offshore, the granite continues underwater as pinnacles rising out of thirty and forty metres — Chumphon to the north-west, Southwest Pinnacle, Sail Rock halfway to Koh Phangan — which are serious sites by any measure, and which draw whale sharks with some regularity in spring and again in autumn.
Above water the island is steeper and emptier than its beach strip suggests. The interior is jungle, the east coast bays are reached by rough track, and half of Koh Tao is quiet by nine in the evening.
The pinnacles, and what makes them different
The bays are for learning; the pinnacles are why divers come back. Chumphon Pinnacle sits north-west of the island, a granite summit topping out around fourteen metres and falling away past forty, hung with barracuda and trevally and occasionally patrolled by a whale shark. Sail Rock, halfway to Koh Phangan, has a vertical chimney you ascend inside from around eighteen metres to six. Southwest Pinnacle is the deepest of the three and the most weather-dependent.
All of them want a boat, decent buoyancy and a guide who has read the current that morning. The difference between a good and a mediocre dive here is almost entirely about timing the tide and the wind.
Whale sharks, and how not to be disappointed
Whale sharks move through the western Gulf, and Koh Tao's pinnacles are among the more reliable places in Thailand to meet one, with the odds best around March to May and again in September and October.
Reliable is a relative word. Plenty of divers spend a week here and see none, and anyone who guarantees you a sighting is selling something. The honest version is that if a whale shark is reported on Chumphon in the morning, a private boat can be over it in the afternoon — and being able to move at short notice is worth considerably more than any particular week of the calendar.
The island above the water
Sairee, on the west coast, is a long beach with a long strip behind it, and it holds most of the island's beds and nearly all of its noise. The rest of Koh Tao is not like that. Tanote and Ao Leuk on the east side sit in granite-walled bays reached by tracks steep enough that a pick-up in low gear is the honest way to do them. Shark Bay in the south holds green turtles grazing seagrass in two metres of water. John-Suwan viewpoint at the southern tip looks down on two bays at once.
None of it takes long — the island is small enough to cross in twenty minutes — but it does require deciding to leave the beach.

Beginners are taught in a small bay by an instructor working with your party alone rather than a class of eight. Where a group is mixed we run divers and snorkellers off the same boat. And we will move the day if a whale shark is reported, which is the whole argument for chartering.

Is Koh Tao good for beginners?
Yes — it is one of the easiest places in the world to learn. The bays on the west and south coasts are shallow, sheltered and largely free of current, the water stays close to twenty-nine degrees year-round, and you can enter from the beach. What is less well understood is that the island also has serious diving offshore on its granite pinnacles, so a party of mixed ability is no problem here.
When can you see whale sharks at Koh Tao?
The best odds are around March to May and again in September and October, when whale sharks move through the western Gulf and are seen on the offshore pinnacles, Chumphon above all. Sightings are never guaranteed and many visitors see none at all. The practical advantage of a private boat is being able to go the same day a sighting is reported, rather than waiting for a scheduled departure.
What is the best time of year to dive Koh Tao?
March to September gives the clearest visibility and the calmest water. The Gulf runs on the north-east monsoon, so the unsettled stretch is roughly November into December — the opposite of the Andaman coast, where those are the good months. Diving continues year-round and the water stays warm throughout; it is visibility and sea state, not temperature, that move with the season.
