What to Expect
A Sino-Portuguese architectural district built during Phuket's 19th-century tin-mining boom, when Chinese and European merchants built shophouses and mansions in a distinctive colonial-colonnade style found almost nowhere else in Thailand. Faded pastel facades, old shophouse cafes, and small museums make it a genuinely different Phuket than the beach resorts most visitors associate with the island.
How to Prepare
Comfortable walking shoes for uneven old pavements, and a willingness to duck into side sois (alleys) rather than sticking to the main thoroughfare, where much of the area's character is concentrated.
