Best Time to Do This
The hour before sunset, in the cool season (November to February) for the most comfortable temperatures — the brick and sandstone ruins take on a warm color as the light lowers, and the day-trip crowds from Bangkok have largely departed by then.
What to Expect
The ruined former capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1350–1767), a UNESCO World Heritage Site of brick chedis, headless Buddha statues deliberately damaged during the Burmese sack of the city, and temple complexes spread across a river-bound island. Late light picks out the texture of centuries-old brick in a way flat midday sun doesn't.
How to Prepare
The site is large and best covered by bicycle, tuk-tuk, or a hired driver moving between temple clusters rather than on foot alone. Standard temple modesty applies at any site with an active shrine, and closed shoes help on uneven brick and stone underfoot.
