Best Time to Do This
August through October, when the paddies are a deep green before harvest, gives the most dramatic terracing; November's just-harvested gold is the second-best window. Avoid the dry months (March–May) when the terraces are bare earth.
What to Expect
Walking paths along the contour lines of the terraces themselves, often shared with local farmers still working the fields, with views back toward Chiang Mai's hills. Many routes pass through small hillside villages growing coffee or fruit alongside the rice.
How to Prepare
Wear closed shoes with grip — terrace paths are narrow, sometimes muddy earth rather than paved trail. Come with realistic expectations about the season: rice terraces outside the green window are simply dry, terraced earth.
